There is also an MPLAB X plugin file, com-picsim-picsimlab.nbm (27,091 bytes, SHA-256 72c47991bca337b55bafe83e85d7562a5419115cb8e3446bcce681d260a4fd46), which lets MPLAB X debug and program PICSimLab over a TCP connection. Download it here: com-picsim-picsimlab.nbm. It is not part of the simulator install itself; you only need it if you work in MPLAB X.

Install overview

  1. Download the installer that matches your Windows (64-bit for most PCs).
  2. Optionally verify the file: open PowerShell in the download folder and run Get-FileHash .\PICSimLab_0.9.3_260920_win64_setup.exe, then compare the result with the SHA-256 in the table above.
  3. Run the setup file and follow the installer prompts. If you chose a ZIP instead, extract it to a folder and run PICSimLab from there — no installation is needed.
  4. Launch PICSimLab, choose a development board, and load a compiled .hex file to start simulating. PICSimLab does not edit or compile source code; write and build your code in MPLAB X, the Arduino IDE, or VS Code with PlatformIO, just as you would for real hardware.

For serial communication with the simulated board, the desktop version needs a virtual null-modem port pair — on Windows that is normally provided by the free com0com driver. Our step-by-step guides below cover the full install and the serial setup.

Windows FAQ

Should I download the 64-bit or the 32-bit version?

If your Windows is 64-bit — which is the case for almost all PCs in use today — choose the 64-bit installer. Use the 32-bit builds only on a 32-bit Windows installation.

What is the difference between the setup .exe and the .zip?

Both contain the same simulator. The setup .exe installs PICSimLab on your system; the .zip is a portable copy you can extract and run without installing, which is handy on a PC where you cannot run installers.

What are the system requirements?

The PICSimLab project does not publish official minimum system requirements (no official CPU, memory or graphics figures), so this site does not list any. If the official documentation adds requirements in the future, this page will be updated to match.

Is this the official PICSimLab website?

No. This is an independent, unofficial community site. Official PICSimLab downloads are distributed only via GitHub and SourceForge (project name “picsim”). The buttons on this page link straight to the official GitHub release files.
