Download PICSimLab for Linux

PICSimLab v0.9.3 (released 20 September 2026) offers more Linux formats than any other platform: separate .deb packages for Ubuntu 24.04 and Ubuntu 22.04, a Flatpak, a portable AppImage, and a terminal-only NOGUI AppImage. Pick the format that matches your system below — every file is the official release file hosted on GitHub, listed with its size and SHA-256 checksum.

Which format should I choose?

  • Ubuntu 24.04 → the 24.04 .deb package.
  • Ubuntu 22.04 → the 22.04 .deb package. The two .deb builds are not interchangeable; match the package to your Ubuntu release.
  • Another distribution, or you prefer sandboxed apps → the Flatpak.
  • No installation / portable use → the AppImage: download it, make it executable, and run it.
  • Headless or scripted runs → the NOGUI AppImage (Linux only). It has no graphical interface: per the official release notes, the NOGUI version “must be used on a terminal and with the remote control interface” (rcontrol, a text-command TCP interface, default port 5000).

Install overview

  1. Download the package for your system and, if you want, verify it against the SHA-256 in the table above (for example with sha256sum <file>).
  2. .deb: install the downloaded package with your package manager, e.g. sudo apt install ./<file>.deb so dependencies are resolved automatically.
  3. Flatpak: install the downloaded bundle with flatpak install <file>.flatpak, then run PICSimLab from your applications menu or with flatpak run.
  4. AppImage: make the file executable (chmod +x <file>.AppImage) and run it directly.
  5. Start PICSimLab, pick a board, and load a compiled .hex file. PICSimLab does not edit or compile source code; build your firmware in MPLAB X, the Arduino IDE, or VS Code with PlatformIO.

For serial communication with the simulated board, the desktop version needs a virtual null-modem port pair — on Linux that is normally provided by tty0tty, which creates linked device pairs such as /dev/tnt2 <=> /dev/tnt3. Our step-by-step guides below cover the .deb, Flatpak and AppImage installs and the serial setup in detail.

Linux FAQ

Can I use the Ubuntu 24.04 .deb on Ubuntu 22.04 (or the other way round)?

The project publishes a separate .deb build for each Ubuntu release, and the file names state the target release. Use the build that matches your system; if neither matches, the Flatpak or AppImage is the safer choice.

What exactly is the NOGUI version?

It is a Linux-only build of PICSimLab without the graphical interface. You run it in a terminal and control the simulation through the remote control interface (rcontrol) — for example to start and stop simulations, load .hex files and inspect pins from scripts or other programs. There is no Windows or macOS NOGUI build.

What are the system requirements?

The PICSimLab project does not publish official minimum system requirements (no official CPU, memory or graphics figures), so this site does not list any.

Is this the official PICSimLab website?

No. This is an independent, unofficial community site. Official PICSimLab downloads are distributed only via GitHub and SourceForge (project name “picsim”). The buttons on this page link straight to the official GitHub release files.
